What Is an Agency Adoption?
Unlike parental placement adoptions, in an agency adoption, it is the agency that selects the family, not the birth mother. The birth mother entrusts the child to the agency and then the agency selects the family from those on their list. It is now more common, however, for agencies to give birth mothers greater involvement in the process of selecting a family. In an agency adoption, an attorney is needed to finalize the adoption after the child has been in the adoptive home for at least six months. The agency prepares a report to the court which is similar to the home study report prepared in parental placement adoptions.
